Classic chocolate brownies

It's surprisingly hard to find a recipe for classic, ordinary, plain chocolate brownies. There are loads of recipes for fancy super-duper all singing, all dancing brownies. As good as they may be I wanted a basic version and this recipe from GoodFood is just that.

It's everything you could want from a brownie. Soft and gooey in the middle and just slightly chewy on the outside with an intense chocolate flavour, best served still warm with cream.

Recipe here.

  1. I've never eaten my brownies with cream before...oh my yumminess.

  2. You're right, I've seen so many brownie variations and I think it's because we try and improve on an already good recipe. Nothing wrong with that, but sometimes it the original that does it for you. And these are the best sort. I love the crackly top especially!

  4. Ooooooh, yum yum yum yum yum! I have great difficulty resisting brownies, Sam. Great difficulty.

Do you know that I've never made a brownie from scratch? I've only ever used box mixes--cake mixes, as a matter of fact! My "famous" brownie recipe is actually a devil's food cake box mix.

    I'm a brownie fraud.

  5. I recommend the brownies in Nigel Slater's The Kitchen Diaries - they are very simple, very chocolatey, and very delicious.

  6. My go-to brownie recipe is a very simple one as well. I think sometimes we think "oh everyone's done it, I must RE-INVENT it", but if it was good to start with, it often doesn't need re-inventing ;-)

  7. Do you know what, I've yet to find my 'perfect' brownie recipe. I'm always slightly disappointed. I'm always on the lookout for a simple, no-nonsense version such as this, so perhaps I'll give this a try!
